Dictionaries for Third Grade Students
The Rotary Club of Monroe County delivers new dictionaries to all third graders in the county. Over the past few years, our club has delivered dictionaries to hundreds of children.
Monroe County Rotary Club Donates Dictionaries To Local Third Grade Students
The Monroe County Rotary Club celebrated National Dictionary Day on October 16 by donating 262 new dictionaries to 3rd grade students in Monroe County. Club members brought the books to children at Valmeyer Elementary, Rogers Elementary, and St. Peter and Paul Catholic School.
“The students were so excited to receive these dictionaries,” said club member Gail Troupe, who coordinated the effort. “Their older siblings, cousins, or friends have told them about the books, and they couldn’t wait to receive their own.”
These aren’t typical dictionaries containing only definitions; these books have facts about the United States presidents, the solar system, and more. “The dictionaries allow the children to have access to the world while staying ‘unplugged.’ Our hope is that the students will use these books to not only understand language, but to learn about the world.” added Troupe.
This is the club’s fourth year donating the dictionaries to local youth, a tradition they plan to continue each fall. In addition to this donation, the Monroe County Rotary Club collects money throughout the year to donate items to local veterans and is preparing a Caring Case program for local children in need due to hardship or foster care transition.
Shorts for Veterans
Jefferson Barracks Veteran’s Administration Hospital, in South County, Saint Louis, Missouri, has requested shorts and swimming suits for veterans going through physical therapy. Our club usually has two drives every year in front of Rural King and Walmart in Waterloo. Any monetary donations are used to purchase more items for the donation. In 2016, we donated hundreds of shorts for our local veterans.
